Congradulations, Youv'e set up kali to work with dark reign, proceed to the next section

3. Setting up kali to work with your internet setup

If you have a router, hub, firewall or if your computer is connected to the internet through another computer you might have to do some extra setting up.

If you know you have no firewall , or no firewall turned on, and your phone line is plugged directly into your computer (dial up), you can probably skip this step ·

If you have a router etc. and know about port forwarding Kali's default port is UDP 2213 however this can be changed in config , youll also need to go to file > settings > advanced (tab) , and set your local ip to the ip address assigned by your router. running ipconfig from a command prompt will tell you your local ip (in windows 2000 or xp +) otherwise run winipcfg (for win95, 98)

how do i know if i have a router or hub, and if so what do i do?

well, if you have a router or hub, it will look something like this
kali setup screenshots

· i dont have that, skip this step
· yeah i have that, read the following..

IP Configuration
NOTE: this step is only nessary if you have a router or hub, otherwise leave it alone

if you have windows XP or 2000, go to command prompt (start > run, type CMD), and type IPCONFIG, it will then tell you what your IP address is, write it down

if you have windows 95, 98, ME, go to start > run, type winipcfg, hit ok, it will then tell you what your IP address is, write it down

In Kali, go to File > Settings > Advanced (tab) , under Local IP#, put in the IP number that you wrote down in the previous step and hit ok
kali setup screenshots

ok, now you need to forward UDP port 2213 on your router, for spacific instructions
you'll need to look at your router and find the Brand and Model number (example Linksys wrt54g)
write it down

select your router here from what you wrote down in the previous step, and follow the directions given, then close the window and return here

once youve forwarded your ports for Kali, your ready for the next section, read the following...

how do i know if i have a firewall, and if so what do i do?
whoever set up the computer should know if theres a firewall or not and how to disable or configure it, and in fact if you have a decent router in place, you dont even need a seperate firewall turned on to begin with. If the firewall is not disabled it needs to be configured to allow kali to access the net, be a server, and access UDP port 2213, if this is not done, kali will not connect properly if at all.

NOTE: its better to configure your firewall to allow kali, than to disable it completely, but i cant provide info on how to do that for every firewall available and you can allways just turn it back on after your done playing dark reign

To Disable the Norton Firewall

  1. Right-click the Norton Internet Security icon on the system tray and select Disable.

To Disable the McAfee Firewall

  1. Uninstall McAfee
  2. Reinstall McAfee, selecting Custom Installation.
  3. Unselect McAfee Firewall.
  4. Finish the rest of the McAfee installation as you did before.

To Disable Zone Alarm Firewall

  1. Right-click the Zone Alarm icon in the System Tray, and select Shutdown Zone Alarm.

To Disable Windows Firewall

The Windows firewall may be turned on without you knowing, for example, if the XP Network Setup Wizard was used.

Windows XP Firewall (not service pack 2)

To turn off the Windows XP firewall, do the following:

  1. Click on the Start button, choose All Programs, then choose Connect To and then Show all connections.
  2. Right-click on the icon for your Internet connection and choose Properties from the pop-up window.
  3. In the window that appears, click on the Advanced tab and uncheck Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet.
  4. Click the OK button. You have now turned off the firewall.

Windows XP Firewall (Service Pack 2)

this is how to disable the built in firewall in windows XP Service Pack 2
This applies to users who have Windows XP Service Pack 2 only.

1. Click on Start and then Control Panel.
2. You will have one of two control panels. Click on the Security Center icon.

6. Click on the balloon, or on the red shield in the system tray, and you will get the screen below. Click on the Recommendations... button.

7. Place a check in the "I have a firewall solution that I'll monitor myself" box. This will stop Windows from popping up alerts that you are at risk. Click OK.
kali setup screenshots

8. After you click OK, you will get the following screen. This screen is saying that Windows will not monitor your firewall settings. Just close the window, and you are done.

Now that all that stuff is done when you launch Kali it should have no problems updating, connecting etc.etc. and you should be ready for the next section

4. Creating and joing internet games in kali

Creating a game
Expand the game lobbies folder, and click Dark Reign, then double click create new lobbie on the right
kali setup screenshots

Click ok
kali setup screenshots

a "game lobby" will be created and what looks like a chat window will appear, if it gives you some mesage about not being connected to a tracker, exit cali, re-launch it and start again at step 4. if that dosent work, double check the IP Configuration,

once youve managed to create a "game lobby", other players can find you in the kali game lobbies and come into your lobbie

kali game lobby screenshot

OK this is important, Once everybody else clicks the green button, and you click the green button dark reign will launch, if it dosent you need to re set_up_kali_to_work_with_darkreign but if you did everything rite thus far and the gods of kali are willing it will launch

when it launches you have to go to MULTIPLAYER   then   LOCAL AREA NETWORK (IPX)
Then wait untill you see the other players pop in , it shouldnt take more than a minute of waiting before everybody shows up if even that long

once everybody shows up, set up the game, hit launch, and

Kick Some Ass !

5. Why isnt kali working for me?
If youve done everything here, double check that you didnt miss anything on this page and have read it all, if that dosent work, i have no idea what the problem is, but you can check the official documentation at kali.net
